The Common Goldeneye is a medium-sized diving duck native to lakes and rivers in northern U.S. and Canada.  During winter months, they migrate to protected and open coastal waters. They dive from the surface for their food.  The Common Goldeneye has white-striped black upperparts, white underparts, an iridescent green-black head with white circular patch between yellow eyes and dark gray bill.  This Goldeneye was recently seen near the mouth of Falmouth Harbor.
