Pied-billed Grebes have been seen over the last month on local fresh water ponds. This Grebe was one of a pair of Grebes recently found paddling around Oyster Pond near the bike path. Grebes are a lot like loons and share similar habitats. Their legs are placed far back on their bodies and this helps them while swimming both above and below the water surface. Grebes are very secretive and typically are heard more than they are seen. In winter, their plumage is reddish brown overall, with dark eyes and a thick yellowish gray bill.
