Jan. 16, 2026: The male Common Goldeneye shows a glossy green-black head, bright yellow eye, round white cheek spot, black bill, bold white sides, and a striking black-and-white wing patch. This Goldeneye was seen recently in flight off of Bristol Beach.
During the winter months in Falmouth, an adult male Common Goldeneye is a striking and high-contrast diving duck. The head is dark and glossy, appearing black at a distance but often revealing a rich green sheen in good light. A bold, round white cheek spot sits at the base of the bill, paired with a bright yellow eye that can stand out even from afar.
The bill is mostly black with a noticeable yellow tip. On the water, the bird shows crisp white sides and breast contrasting sharply with a black back, creating a clean, “tuxedo-like” appearance. In flight, large white wing patches formed by the secondaries flash prominently against dark wings, making the species easy to recognize as it moves across coastal ponds, bays, and harbors.
