March 21, 2025: in late winter, Horned Grebes in Falmouth transition into breeding plumage, increase foraging, and gather in small groups before migrating north to freshwater breeding lakes in Canada and the northern U.S. This Horned Grebe was recently seen just offshore at Trunk River Beach.
Horned Grebes wintering on Cape Cod are typically found in coastal bays, sheltered harbors, and nearshore waters, where they dive for small fish and invertebrates. As late winter transitions to early spring, they begin molting into their striking breeding plumage, with black heads, golden ear tufts, and deep red eyes. During this time, they increase their foraging activity to build up energy reserves for migration. By March and April, as waters warm and food remains plentiful, Horned Grebes start gathering in small groups before departing north to their freshwater breeding lakes in Canada and the northern U.S.
