Local marshes have been busy with all kinds of wading birds that are gathering and staging prior to winter migration down south. Among the most beautiful wading birds are the all-white Great Egrets. During the local breeding season, Great Egrets nest in trees over water or on islands and regularly perch in trees when not feeding. They forage in local marshes in larger numbers during the fall. The great egret catches small fish in shallow water with a quick thrust of its bill. This Great Egret was recently seen in Great Sippewissett Marsh in West Falmouth.
