The Ipswich Sparrow is a unique subspecies of the Savannah Sparrow. This small sparrow breeds strictly on Sable Island, Nova Scotia and regularly overwinters in small numbers along the Mid-Atlantic coast. This sparrow is medium brown overall with streaking. The crown is more beige with a very pale yellow eye-stripe. They have a whitish throat, breast, and belly with light streaking on sides and chest. Sable Island is the main breeding ground for these sparrows and they may be found in Falmouth in coastal dunes in the winter months. This Ipswich Sparrow was recently seen along the dunes at Black Beach in West Falmouth.
