The Common Merganser is another one of the local wintering ducks in Falmouth.  They breed in northern forests from Alaska to Newfoundland and migrate in winter to lakes, rivers, and coastal bays.  The Common Merganser uses its serrated bill to catch fish underwater.  It has a glossy blackish green head, dark eyes, a blood red bill, creamy white body plumage, and a black stripe on its back.  This Common Merganser was seen in open water on Great Pond.
