The Piping Plovers nesting on the beach near the Shining Sea Bike Path are ready to raise their chicks in this new nesting location. A 100 foot long section of the beach has been roped off to protect the nest. The plovers are listed as a threatened bird species at both the state and federal level. Upon hatching, young plover chicks depart the nest in a matter of hours and begin feeding themselves. The hatchlings are closely watched and guarded by the parents.
