The Northern Rough-winged Swallow is a small migratory bird that returns to Cape Cod in April and begins nest building in May.  They tend to be most active and noisiest just after dawn and before sunset.  They are amazing fliers with great skill in aerial pursuit and capture of flying insects.  These swallows are frequently found around gravel pits, especially near water.  It is brownish above, grayish brown below, and has a short black bill.  A recent walk around the Breivogel Ponds area in Hatchville provided an opportunity to spot and enjoy this Northern Rough-winged Swallow.
