Bufflehead ducks are easy to find in almost all Falmouth harbors and sheltered waterways during the winter months. This flying pair was recently observed on Siders Pond behind town hall. The bufflehead is the smallest of the diving ducks. The male has white sides, a black back and a very dark green and purple head with a white patch on the back of it. The female is a browner version of the male with a white cheek patch behind the eye. This time of year buffleheads appear more playful as they chase one another and engage in courtship displays.
