The canvasback is a regular winter visitor to Perch Pond in Teaticket. This pond at the northern end of Great Pond is a good location to view a variety of wintering ducks when open water conditions prevail. The canvasback is striking, with its bright red eyes, reddish chestnut head and neck, wedge-shaped head, black breast, and light, grayish white back. A diving duck, the canvasback gathers with other ducks on bays and lakes in the winter and forages for underwater vegetation.
