One of the most striking wintering ducks is the Canvasback.  Each winter just a few Canvasbacks find their way to saltwater bays and freshwater ponds in Falmouth.  These diving ducks may dive as much as thirty feet to feed on underwater roots and marine plants.  The male Canvasback has wild red eyes and a rusty colored head, black breast, along with a white back and sides.  These Canvasbacks were recently seen in Perch Pond just off of Teaticket Path.
