The Tufted Duck is a medium sized diving duck. It is a close relative of other local wintering ducks such as the Ring-necked Duck. They do not breed in North America and are a rarity seen within larger flocks of other ducks. The male Tufted Duck is quite distinctive with an all black head and long, wispy tuft of head feathers. It has a black breast and back with gleaming white flanks and yellow eyes. This Tufted Duck was most recently seen at the north end of Siders Pond behind Town Hall.
