In Falmouth, Common Loons are found mostly in salt waters, bays, and estuaries. Their principal spring and fall migration route is close to the mainland, crossing the Cape near the Cape Cod Canal. In summer, its head and neck are black, glossed with green, with a broad, white collar of black-and-white lines on the sides of its mid-neck; its back is cross-banded black with white spots. The loon’s eyes are bright red and this helps the bird to see better underwater. This Common Loon was recently seen at the entry channel into Great Sippewissett Marsh in West Falmouth.
