CF2C6574-001The Common Tern is a small seabird that returns in the spring from warmer locales to Falmouth beaches and around Buzzards Bay.  They generally breed along the coast on barrier beaches, or sandy and gravelly islands.  The Common Tern feeds mainly on a variety of small fish.  Swarms of terns can be seen plunge diving for fish in shallow waters just off the beach.  The Common Tern has gray upperparts, pale gray-white underparts, a black cap and red bill.  This Common Tern was recently seen landing on rocks near Woods Hole.
