Least Terns typically return to Cape Cod and Buzzards Bay beaches from the end of May until early June. They begin nesting activities on sandy beaches just above the high tide line. They are unusually protective of their nests and will aggressively drive away human intruders. The Least Tern is a small tern with a black cap and nape, gray upperparts, white underparts, a white forehead and a distinctive orange yellow bill with a dark tip. This Least Tern was observed at sunset cruising along Wood Neck Beach.
