The colder weather on Cape Cod invites searching for the arrival of wintering ducks. Among the sea ducks in local harbors and sheltered bays, the medium-sized Black Scoter is a common sight with a round head and dark gray bill. This female is brownish overall with a dark cap and light coloredcheek. Scoters dive for mollusks and aquatic insects. This female was observed in a small flock in West Falmouth Harbor.
