Every winter sees growing numbers of wintering sea ducks in large flotillas around Wood Hole passage. The biggest numbers are among
Common Eiders. These are large diving ducks with a distinctive sloping forehead, striking black and white plumage, and a dark crown. The Common Eider is the largest duck in the Northern Hemisphere. This adult male was seen taking off near the tip of Penzance Point.
