Hooded Mergansers are very common wintering ducks in coastal ponds and embayments from West Falmouth
Harbor to Waquoit Bay. This small diving duck forages underwater by capturing fish with its serrated and hooked bill.
Known as a Hoodie, the male has a black head, neck, and back, and white underparts with brownish flanks. It has a
distinct white crest with bright yellow eyes. This Hoodie was seen at Green Pond while rising up from the water and
stretching its wings.
