Fall hawk migration is starting to wind down with smaller numbers but greater variety coming through in October.  Among the less common raptors is this Merlin, which was observed over the Columbus Day weekend at Crane WMA in Falmouth.  Merlins are fast flying falcons and  slightly larger than Kestrels.  Merlins are known for flying with amazing power and speed.  They are typically found in open fields perched atop a lookout post.
