Red-breasted Nuthatches are showing up at feeders and in wooded areas all over Falmouth.  Nuthatches are common woodland birds with their distinctive shape and feeding techniques.  They can be seen typically moving downward on a tree trunk probing for insects and spiders. Due to a likely shortage of breeding ground food supply, this nuthatch is showing up in our area in unusually large numbers. This smaller nuthatch has blue-gray upperparts, rusty underparts, and a distinctive black eyestripe.
